Sabrina van der Meulen is a self-taught artist from Long Island, she creates improvisational multimedia pieces using found objects and unconventional mediums grounded in studies on folk practices, symbology, theology, and occult history. Her work aims to confront the loss of ritual in modern times and our disconnect from the body/consciousness as a byproduct of social pressure to be palatable/marketable. She has developed a research heavy method, collecting references on herbal medicine, religious imagery, mythology, and folk practices that support the intent of each piece. Using a combination of traditional media and experimental materials such as hair, botanical dyes/teas, rust, and chemical reactions her work layers abstract marks, manifestations of emotional state, and ritual motifs until a final image appears.
